Benefits of Massage include:

*Relaxation *Stress Reduction *Pain Reduction *Injury Treatment and Rehabilitation *Improved Flexibilty *Improved Posture *Increased Circulation

Midwifery

I am also a lay midwife in the state of Washington. I have apprenticed in North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Texas. These apprenticeships have been with various homebirth midwives in their communities. I have also delivered over 100 babies as of this writing. Homebirth is a wonderful option and choice for women in the childbearing phase of their lives. I have been extremely grateful to the women, men, and babies who have welcomed me into their homes to help them during this wonderful period of their lives. Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions about homebirth and midwives.

My Current Practice:

Currently, I am in a small solo practice. I also help assist another midwife in the area. I am serving families throughout the greater Seattle area (mostly N. Seattle, Everett, and the Eastside). I am also a certified labor assistant with ALACE(formerly Informed Homebirth/Informed Parenting).

I see my clients on Fridays and some special times can be arranged if Fridays don't fit into your schedule. My appointments are ususally one hour in length and there is no charge for consultation visits. Expectant mothers are seen every month from 12 weeks of pregnancy until the 28week of pregnancy. After the 28th week, I like to see moms every 2 weeks until the 36th week and weekly until you have your baby. Somewhere along the 36th week, I like to do a home visit. This gives me a chance to know exactly where you live, the setup of the home, and meet all the people who will be at your birth.

Lab work and genetic screening is recommended, and I do the lab work out of my home and it is sent to a lab in the Puget Sound area.

Labor and Delivery:

I attend labors and birth usually with another midwife and an assistant. I think your birth is safer this way, and it also gives me extra hands and eyes. During the first stage of labor the fetal heart tones are monitored every half hour. I prefer usually a fetoscope, but I may(depending on the parent's suggestions) use a doppler. During the second stage the baby's heart tones will be checked more frequently. I encourage all my moms to eat and drink. This is one of the hardest jobs you will every do in your life and it is important for you to keep your energy level up by eating and drinking. Once the baby is born he/she is wrapped in warm towels and doesn't leave mom's chest. Breastfeeding is established almost immediately. One of my requirements is that you nurse your baby following the birth.

Postpartum:

The midwives and assistants stay a minimum of three hours after the birth or longer if necessary. During that time we make sure mom and baby are safe and that breastfeeding is well established. Before I leave, the baby is given a gentle thorough exam (newborn exam) and mom is also given a gentle and thorough exam. I will usually come back to the home after 24 hours. This is check on mom and baby. Mom and baby are seen again on days 3 and 7 postpartum. Phone calls to me are very much encouraged if you have concerns. The last time I see you is at the 6week postpartum visit. At this time a pap smear may be scheduled and a referral for any birth control is given. I'm not in the authority to perscribe birth control, so a referral is almost always given at this time.

Emergencies:

I am trained and certified in Infant and Adult CPR

I am trained and certifed in Neonatal Resuscitation

I am trained and certified in I.V. skills

I do carry oxygen

If an emergency should arise, EMS will be called immediately and mother and/or baby would be transported to the hospital. As of this writing, I have never had a bad outcome due to an emergency. A good midwife knows the warning signs and will transport immediately if there looks like there might be a problem with you or your baby.

If you have any questions about my practice or would like to set up an initial consultation, please e-mail me or call. If I cannot serve you and your family, I will try to find a provider who will.

Many Blessings,

Stephanie
